I actually have to disagree on that! Cher did not start using vocoder! but anyways, vocoder is not bad @ all... depending on how u use it! The person to blame is T-Pain for ABUSING IT! THEN Lil WAYNE for taking it over board by trying to rap using auto-tune! then Snoop used it, and R-Kelly then it was JUST normal for everyone else to use it! I only think its necessary for elctro-dance-euro music or maybe on come hiphop/rnb track where you have a music video with a computerized effect! (Or something like that... Hope Im making any sense =D)
